1971 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

GM# 50 JUNE 2, 1971 VS ST. LOUIS CARDINALS

BUCS EXPLODE FOR SIX RUNS IN EIGHTH INNING TO BEAT CARDS, 7-3

With the score tied 1-1, heading into the bottom of the eighth, St. Louis reliever, Chuck Taylor walked Dave Cash to begin the inning. He struck out Vic Davalillio, but Roberto Clemente singled, sending Cash to third. St. Louis then chose to intentionally walk the dangerous, Willie Stargell, deliberately loading the bases. The move didn’t pay off, as Richie Hebner laced a two run single.

The Cardinals stuck with Taylor, in the hopes he could get out of trouble. It looked like the correct move, when he fanned Manny Sanguillen, for the second out, but Al Oliver would end Taylor’s day, with a three run clout.

To make matters worse for St. Louis, Gene Alley greeted Taylor’s replacement, Al Santorini, by homering on his first pitch.

Mudcat Grant, who pitched a clean top of the eighth, was given a chance to pitch the ninth. He did so and struggled some, allowing a walk and then back to back doubles to Lou Brock and Matty Alou, but eventually finished the inning as the game winner. WP-Mudcat Grant(1-2). LP-Chuck Taylor. HR-Al Oliver(11). Gene Alley(4).
