BLASS NARROWLY MISSES 3RD STRAIGHT SHUTOUT IN BUCS’ 5-1 WIN

Steve Blass saw a 28 consecutive scoreless innings streak come to an end yesterday, but he improves to 7 and 1 and he led his team to a 5-1 win over the Houston Astros.

The red hot Blass was on the verge of a third straight shutout, as he took a 5-0 lead into the top of the ninth, but finally, ran out of gas, in what has been a tremendous stretch of pitching.

Blass surrendered a single to Bob Watson to start the inning, then walked Dennis Menke. Doug Rader reached on a fielder’s choice, sending Watson to third. John Hiatt drew the second base on balls of the inning and Blass found himself at his point of weakness. Roger Metzger’s single ended the shutout bid and Blass gave way to Dave Giusti, who came on to get the final two outs.

Dave Cash led the offense with three hits. Pittsburgh has been in a power drought, having not homered in three straight games. WP-Steve Blass(7-1). LP-Larry Dierker.

Houston and Pittsburgh battle again tomorrow, with Wade Blasingame facing Dock Ellis.
