1971 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

GM# 55 JUNE 7, 1971 AT CHICAGO CUBS

DESPITE 15 HITS, PIRATES ARE CURB STOMPED BY CUBS, 10-3

Nellie Briles started and Al Oliver’s three run homer in the top of the third put the Buccos on top, 3-0, but things quickly unraveled from there. Chicago scored ten runs over the next four innings, to win a 10-3 laugher.

The Pirates banged out 15 hits, one more than the Cubs, but also stranded 12 baserunners. Chicago got home runs from Paul Popovich, Billy Williams and Johnny Callison, with two of those coming against Bob Johnson, in an inning and a third of relief.

Three Pirate errors certainly didn’t help the cause. The two clubs will try again tomorrow, with Jim Nelson getting a rare start against Ken Holtzman. WP-Joe Decker. LP-Nellie Briles(4-2). HR-Al Oliver(12).
