1971 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

GM# 59 JUNE 11, 1971 AT ST. LOUIS CARDINALS

CARDINALS HAND ELLIS 1ST LOSS AS THEY DEFEAT BUCS, 6-4

The game had a bad feel to it, when Dock Ellis gave up singles to the first three batters he faced. All three of those batters would score and Ellis found himself quickly behind, 3-0. He only made it to the third inning, where St. Louis tacked on two more runs.

Pittsburgh got back in it in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs. Willie Stargell led off the stanza with a solo home run. Al Oliver and Dave Cash would later double in that inning. It was hoped that Dock could escape with a no decision, but the Buccos could get no closer.

The Cardinals tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, when Ted Simmons singled in Matty Alou. WP-Reggie Cleveland. LP-Dock Ellis(7-1). HR-Willie Stargell(20).

Game three in the series has Nelson Briles pitching against Chris Zachary.
