NELSON BRILES SPINS 5 HIT SHUTOUT AS BUCS BEAT CARDS, 5-0

Some quality pitching and some luck, helped Nellie Briles throw a five hit shutout against the Cardinals, as Pittsburgh took a 2-1 lead in the series.

Three times the Cards had a runner on third base and could not score. In all, they left nine runners on base. For the Pirates, Al Oliver had three hits, Dave Cash, two. Willie Stargell knocked in two runs, with a single and sacrifice fly. Briles helped his own cause with an rbi double in the eighth inning. WP-Nelson Briles(6-2). LP- Chris Zachary.

Pittsburgh will try to win the series tomorrow, but it will be a tall task. Neil Walker will have to go against slider specialist, Steve Carlton.
