GM# 61 JUNE 13, 1971 AT ST. LOUIS CARDINALS
PIRATES EDGE CARLTON TO BEAT CARDS AND TAKE SERIES
It looked as if Steve Carlton would notch a victory, as he took a 2-1 lead into the top of the eighth, but Pittsburgh came through with two runs, to take a 3-2 lead, eventually winning by that score and taking a four game series, three games to one. The Pirates have now padded their lead against second place St. Louis by five and a half games.
The Cards scored first, when Joe Torre tripled in the bottom of the second against Luke Walker. He later scored on a Jim Beauchamp ground ball. The Pirates tied it in the top of the fifth, on Willie Stargell’s twenty first homer of the season.
Lou Brock led off the bottom of the sixth with a double, then Matty Alou singled him in, putting St. Louis up, 2-1.
Gene Alley led off the Pirate eighth with a single off Carlton. Bob Miller, who had relieved Walker, tried to lay down a sacrifice bunt, but popped out to first base. However, Dave Cash beat out an infield hit, then Carlton walked Clines, loading the bases. The decision was made to let Carlton pitch to Roberto Clemente, who has been in and out of the lineup and Roberto made Lefty pay, stroking a two run single. Left hander Don Shaw came out of the pen to face Stargell. He did his job, getting Willie to line out to second base. Frank Linzy came in and got Manny Sanguillen for the final out of the inning.
Miller pitched the final three innings for the Bucs, allowing no runs and just one hit. He now has five wins, all in relief. WP-Bob Miller(5-0). LP-Steve Carlton. HR-Willie Stargell(21).
