1971 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

GM# 64 JUNE 16, 1971 AT HOUSTON ASTROS

PIRATES SWEEP ASTROS BEHIND ANOTHER DOMINANT ELLIS PERFORMANCE

The season has a long way to go, but there’s no doubt, that Dock Ellis and Steve Blass are both early candidates for the N.L. Cy Young Award. Yesterday, Blass tossed a four hitter, narrowly losing a shutout in the ninth inning and today, Dock Ellis beat Wade Blasingame in a 1-0 pitcher’s duel, to collect his third whitewash of the year.

The win gives Pittsburgh a series sweep of Houston. They have won five straight and seven of their last eight games. Their two pitching stars; Blass: 8-1 1.73 and Ellis: 8-1 2.11 are a big reason why. WP-Dock Ellis(8-1). LP-Wade Blasingame.

The team is idle tomorrow, June 17th, then heads back to Three Rivers Stadium, for a four game set, including a doubleheader, against the Montreal Expos. Luke Walker takes on Steve Renko in game one.
