GM# 69 JUNE 21, 1971 VS NEW YORK METS
ELLIS GOES DISTANCE AS BUCS EDGE METS, 2-1
Dock Ellis pitched his fifth complete game and improved to 9 and 1 on the season, as Pittsburgh opened their most recent series with New York with a 2-1 win.
Interestingly enough, all runs in the game were unearned. Pittsburgh got two runs in the bottom of the first, with Gene Clines drawing a one out walk, then Roberto Clemente reaching on a three base error by Ken Singleton. That of course, scored Clines and later, Roberto would come in on a Manny Sanguillen base hit.
The Mets picked up their lone run in the top of the fourth. Ed Kranepool made it all the way to third on a Gene Clines miscue, then scored on a Ken Boswell grounder. WP-Dock Ellis(9-1). LP-Jerry Koosman.
A struggling, Jim Nelson will be given a rare start tomorrow, when he squares off against, Charlie Williams.
The Cardinals lost to the Dodgers, so Pittsburgh has opened up a 9 and a half game lead in the N.L. East.
