GM#’S 74, 75. JUNE 27, 1971 AT PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES
PHILLIES SWEEP TWINBILL; WIN SERIES, THREE GAMES TO ONE
The Pittsburgh Pirates still have an eight game cushion over the second place, New York Mets, but some cracks are beginning to show in the Bucs armor.
Philadelphia took three out of four against Pittsburgh, most recently, sweeping a doubleheader, 5 to 1 and 4-1. The Pirates have lost six of their last ten.
In the opener, Woodie Fryman tossed a complete game, five hitter, limiting Pittsburgh to just one run. He fanned a dozen, to go with four walks. Willie Montanez and Deron Johnson hit home runs. Bob Johnson(2-3) was the losing pitcher.
The second game saw the Phillies pull out a 4-1 victory, courtesy of Roger Freed’s, three run blast, off starter, Nelson Briles.
Once again, the Pirates could only manage one run, wasting a three hit day, from Jackie Hernandez. Bill Mazeroski had been a great stop gap for Dave Cash, who is away on military reserve duty. Maz went 2-4 in both games of the twinbill. WP-Reynolds. LP-Nelson Briles(6-4). HR-Freed.
Pittsburgh flies to St. Louis, where they will take on the Cardinals. Bob Moose is slated to go against Jerry Reuss.
