GM# 76 JUNE 28, 1971 AT ST. LOUIS CARDINALS
HAGUE, MCNERTY EACH HOMER TWICE; CARDS WIN 6-4 IN 10 INNINGS
Joe Hague and Jerry McNerty each clubbed a pair of solo home runs, Hague’s second was a walkoff two run shot in the bottom of the tenth, off Dave Giusti.
Pittsburgh trailed 4-3, heading into the top of the ninth, when Gene Alley homered off Frank Linzy, tying the game. Giusti had worked the bottom of the ninth for the Pirates and came back out for the tenth. He surrendered a leadoff single to Matty Alou, then got Jose Cruz to fly out to short centerfield. Joe Torre reached on a fielder’s choice, with Alou forced out at second base.
Hague stepped in, having homered in the bottom of the third, off starter, Bob Moose. He sent the first offering from Giusti over the wall, to give the Cardinals the 6-4 win.
Pittsburgh has dropped three games in a row. The short series concludes today, with Luke Walker up against Reggie Cleveland.
