1971 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

GM# 77 JUNE 29, 1971 AT ST. LOUIS CARDINALS

CARDS GET TO VEALE IN RELIEF AS THEY BEAT BUCS, 8-5

Bob Veale’s struggles out of the bullpen continue, as St. Louis tagged him for two runs on three straight hits, in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Cardinals would go on to an eight to five victory, taking both games of a short, two game series. It was Pittsburgh’s four loss in a row.

Veale’s ERA has ballooned to 6.82 and he has been ineffective against left handers, supposedly his specialty. Joe Torre led the St. Louis offense by going, 4-5, with a double. Jose Cruz and Jose Cardenal homered.

The Pirates got a homerun and a double from Willie Stargell, along with a single and double from Roberto Clemente, yet still lost. WP-Chuck Taylor. LP-Bob Veale(2-2). HR-Willie Stargell(22); Jose Cruz, Jose Cardenal.

Pittsburgh now heads to Shea Stadium in New York, for another short, two game series, against the Mets. Steve Blass will try to get the Bucs back on track against flamethrower, Nolan Ryan.
