JUNE RECAP
Though the Pirates got through June with a winning record, going 17 for 30; they have dropped their last five and have lost seven of their last ten. Their lead in the N.L. East has dropped from a high of 9.5 games to 6 games.
Pittsburgh’s hitting has cooled significantly, but it is their bullpen which has given them the most trouble. Left hander, Bob Veale’s ERA is a skyhigh, 6.82. Sometime spot starter, Bob Moose’s is 5.60, Mudcat Grant’s is 5.26 and Bob Johnson’s is 4.77. Nellie Briles has lost 3 of his last 4 mound appearances.
The Mets have supplanted the Cards as the biggest threat to the Pirates and they recently swept Pittsburgh, in a two game series. Hopefully, as the weather heats up, so will the Buccos.
