GM# 80 JULY 2, 1971 AT CHICAGO CUBS
STARGELL, ROBERTSON POWER BUCS PAST CUBS, ENDING SIX GAME SKID
Willie Stargell homered, doubled and knocked in five runs and Bob Robertson also went deep, as the Pittsburgh Pirates finally ended a six game losing streak, by defeating the Chicago Cubs, 8-5.
Despite a rough start by Bob Moose, who allowed four runs in four innings, the Bucs finally broke out of their offensive slump, banging out 15 hits. Roberto Clemente banged out two doubles and Milt May was 3-4. The offense got to Fergie Jenkins early, knocking him out of the box in just an inning and a third.
The Pirates had a 7-1 lead after just two innings, when Billy Williams and Joe Pepitone tagged Moose with back to back home runs. Jim Hickman would later hit a solo shot off of Luke Walker, who relieved Moose, but that was the extent of the Pirates scoring. WP-Bob Moose(4-6). LP-Ferguson Jenkins. HR-Willie Stargell(23), Bob Robertson(18); Billy Williams, Joe Pepitone, Jim Hickman.
It was a long time coming, but the Buccos finally collected their 50th victory. Bob Johnson will battle Milt Pappas in the next game.
