1971 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

GM# 81 JULY 3, 1971 AT CHICAGO CUBS

STARGELL HOMERS TWICE; SETS 2 GAME RBI RECORD IN 8-5 COMEBACK WIN

Willie Stargell had done a day’s work, to say the least. He smacked a pair of three run home runs, for a record 11 runs batted in, over two games. He drove in five runs in yesterday’s game against Chicago. It was Willie’s fourth, multi homer game of the season.

The Pirates needed all Stargell’s power’s in this game, as they fell behind, 5-0, behind starter, Bob Johnson, who went just an inning and a third. Bob Veale supplanted Johnson for an inning and two thirds, then Nellie Briles took over and tossed three innings of shutout ball.

In the top of the sixth, Ron Santo made a crucial error of Roberto Clemente’s grounder, putting two runners on for Stargell. He made Milt Pappas pay, with a deep blast over the right-field wall.

The Cubs had bullpen troubles in the top of the eighth, when three walks and a single, by two separate pitchers, allowed Pittsburgh to tie the game at five all.

Wilver’s coup de grace came in the top of the ninth. With Bill Mazeroski and Al Oliver aboard, Stargell sent an Earl Stephenson pitch over the ivy in center field, for his second three run blast of the game. Giusti set the Cubs down in order to close out the comeback victory. WP-Nellie Briles(7-5). LP-Earl Stephenson. HR-Willie Stargell 2(25); Ron Santo.
