GM# 82 JULY 4, 1971 AT CHICAGO CUBS
CUBS SPOIL KISON’S DEBUT WITH 4TH OF JULY FIREWORKS
The Chicago Cubs celebrated Independence Day by routing Pittsburgh, 11-0. Bill Hands tossed a four hit shutout and Cubs batters belted four home runs against Bruce Kison, who was making his major league debut.
It was an auspicious start for the 21 year old, who started the game by giving up four straight singles ( though Don Kessinger was picked off first), then a three run home run, to Ron Santo. When Billy Williams stroked a two run clout off Kison in the second inning, his day was done, with a line of 1.2IP, 6ER, 6H, 0K, 2BB, 2HR and an ERA of 45.00.
Things went no better for Jim Nelson, who allowed four runs in 2.1 innings, including homers by Joe Pepitone and Jim Hickman. Only Luke Walker, who pitched three scoreless innings, did well out of the bullpen. It was just the second time the Pirates have been blanked. San Francisco turned the trick, earlier in the season. WP-Bill Hands. LP-Bruce Kison(0-1). HR-Santo, Williams, Pepitone, Hickman.
Steve Blass will try for the series win as he toes the slab against Ken Holtzman, in the final game of the series.
