GM# 86 JULY 8, 1971 VS. CINCINNATI REDS
KISON TAKES PERFECT GAME INTO 8TH; WINS 5-0 ON ONE HIT SHUTOUT
Just four days after getting blown off the mound, rookie Bruce Kison pitched one of the best games in the majors this year. Kison did not allow a baserunner until Dave Concepcion of the Reds slapped a single into left field, with two outs in the eighth inning. The home crowd gave Kison a two minute, standing ovation, for his efforts. He walked one batter in the ninth, but was able to finish the game, for a one hit, shutout win, joining a select few who have achieved that feat.
Kison was no slouch with the bat, either, stroking a single and double and scoring a run. Willie Stargell belted his twenty sixth home run of the season. With the win, Pittsburgh salvages the final game of the series, which was won by Cincinnati, two games to three. WP-Bruce Kison(1-1). LP-Don Gullett. HR-Willie Stargell(26).
