Steve Blass went seven innings, allowing two runs both unearned. Those runs came in the top of the second, with two outs. Dick Barton drew a walk, then Dave Campbell singled. A passed ball by Manny Sanguillen put runners on second and third. Gene Alley then committed a two base error, allowing both runners to score.
Sangy redeemed himself with an rbi single in the sixth, cutting the lead in half. Luke Walker pitched the top of the eighth, keeping San Diego at bay. In the bottom of the eighth, Dave Campbell would commit his own two base error, putting Gene Clines at second with nobody out. Roberto Clemente hit his third single of the day and Willie Stargell walked, loading the bases. Sangy knocked in his second run with a sacrifice fly. Then Severinson walked Bob Robertson, to force in the go ahead run. Mudcat Grant pitched a clean ninth, to log his fourth save. WP-Luke Walker(8-2). LP-Gary Ross.
