GM# 90 JULY 16, 1971 VS SAN DIEGO PADRES
PADRES LIMIT BUCS TO JUST FOUR HITS, IN 3-2 LOSS
A day after beating San Diego by a 3-2 score, the Padres turned the tables and defeated the Pirates by the very same margin.
Pittsburgh could only manage four hits in the loss, singles by Mazeroski, Davalillio and Oliver and a double by Manny Sanguillen. Bob Johnson started and although he wasn’t exactly bombed, allowing just two runs, he did give up four hits and three walks, in just two innings pitched.
Bob Moose took over and actually pitched five innings of quality ball, but he gave up the go ahead run in the top of the seventh, when Gerry Jestadt hit a pinch hit double, then later scored on Enzo Hernandez’s rbi single. WP-Danny Coombs. LP-Bob Moose(4-7).
The series finale has Fred Norman going up against Dock Ellis. St. Louis won their fifth straight, shaving Pittsburgh’s lead to 4.5 games.
