GM#’S 92, 93 JULY 18, 1971 VS LOS ANGELES DODGERS
PIRATES NOTCH TWO WINS IN TWINBILL SWEEP AGAINST DODGERS
Pittsburgh beat Los Angeles twice, winning game one, 4-3, in eleven innings, on a Gene Clines, walkoff home run; then scoring five runs in one inning, to defeat them in game two, 5-3.
Bruce Kison started game one and pitched a solid seven innings, allowing just two runs, which he gave up in the first inning. The Pirates got a run in the second, fourth and seventh innings, but L.A. would tie it in the top of the ninth. Clines ended the game with his fourth home run of the season. WP-Bob Veale(3-3). LP-Hoyt Wilhelm. HR-Gene Clines(4).
Game two was similar to the first, in that the Dodgers scored twice, right out of the gate. Starter, Luke Walker gave up a triple to Bobby Valentine, then three straight singles, to begin the game.
Walker quickly settled down, however, posting zeroes for the next seven innings. Pittsburgh exploded for five runs in the fourth, when Vic Davalillo, Willie Stargell, Rich Hebner and Gene Clines all doubled.
Dave Giusti allowed one run in the top of the ninth, but still recorded his eleventh save. WP-Luke Walker(9-2). LP-Bill Singer. SV-Dave Giusti(11).
The series concludes today, with Nellie Briles facing Claude Osteen.
