1971 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

GM# 95 JULY 20, 1971 VS SAN DIEGO PADRES

GAYLORD PERRY BLANKS BUCS IN PITCHING GEM

Gaylord Perry led the San Diego Padres to victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates, with a two hit shutout. Perry took a perfect game into the eighth inning, retiring the first 21 batters he faced, before Willie Stargell singled with no outs in the bottom of the eighth, to break it up. Al Oliver would finish with another single, two batters later, but that would be the extent of Pittsburgh’s offense.

San Diego’s ace finished with 0 runs on two hits. He struck out four and did not walk a batter. Ken Henderson and Dick Dietz both homered for the Padres. Steve Blass took the loss, allowing four runs in six innings. WP-Gaylord Perry. LP-Steve Blass(10-3). HR-Ken Henderson, Dick Dietz.

The second game of the series pits Ken Bryant against Bob Johnson.
