GM#’S 100, 101 JULY 25, 1971 VS SAN DIEGO PADRES
BUCS NEARLY TOSS BACK TO BACK SHUTOUTS AS THEY SWEEP PADRES TWINBILL
Things couldn’t have gone much better for the Pittsburgh Pirates, as they won all four games against San Diego, including a double header sweep, in which Bob Johnson pitched a 5-0 shutout and Bob Moose pitched a 5-1 six hitter.
In what was far and away his best start of the season, Johnson notched his first whitewash, limiting the Padres to five hits. He did issue five walks against five punchouts, but was able to limit damage each time.
Roberto Clemente and Willie Stargell remain hot, with both homering in back to back games. WP-Bob Johnson(3-4). LP-Fred Norman. HR-Roberto Clemente(8), Willie Stargell(30).
Game two saw Bob Moose put up zeros for the first seven innings. Finally in the eighth, the shutout bid was lost when Fred Kendall and Don Mason each doubled, for San Diego’s only tally. It was the first time this year that Moose has gone the distance.
Gene Clines and Gene Alley both tripled. Al Oliver had a homerun. WP-Bob Moose(5-7). LP-Steve Arlin. HR-Al Oliver(13).
The Pirates are idle tomorrow, then head to Los Angeles to play the Dodgers. Dock Ellis battles Al Downing in the opening game. Standings will be posted after tomorrow’s results.
