Steve Blass pitched seven and one third innings of shutout ball, but when Ron Fairey and Ron Hunt reached on back to back singles in the eighth inning, with one out, the Pirates called on Dave Giusti, who got Boots Day to hit into an inning-ending double play. Giusti then retired the Expos in order, in the bottom of the ninth inning.
