GM# 111 AUGUST 5, 1971 AT MONTREAL EXPOS
PIRATES RALLY FOR 3 RUNS IN TOP OF 9TH, TO BEAT EXPOS, 4-2
Expos closer, Mike Marshall quickly retired Jose Pagan and pinch hitter, Milt May, in the top of the ninth, but then the dam broke.
Nursing a 2-1 lead, Marshall walked Dave Cash, then Expo first sacker, Ron Fairley booted an easy chance, putting runners on first and second. A Roberto Clemente double scored Cash and sent Alley to third, ending Marshall’s outing. Dan McGinn came in and immediately gave up a second double to Willie Stargell, plating both Alley and Clemente. McGinn then walked Al Oliver before getting Bob Robertson to fly out to center field.
Bruce Kison wasn’t the dominant pitcher he has been, but he went six innings, allowing two runs on five hits, a quality start. Bob Veale earned the win, with two innings of scoreless relief. WP-Bob Veale(5-3). LP-Mike Marshall. SV-Bob Miller. HR-Rusty Staub.
The Bucs win the series, two games to one and now return to Three Rivers Stadium, for their next home stand. The Phillies will kick it off with a four-game set, including a doubleheader.
