GM# 116 AUGUST 10, 1971 VS CHICAGO CUBS
DAVE CASH STROKES 2 RUN, WALKOFF TRIPLE AS BUCS SHOCK CUBS, 5-4
Each team scored two runs in the first inning. Chicago got their tallies on a Joe Pepitone, two run blast; while in the bottom of the first, Dave Cash was walked by Juan Pizzaro to start it off. Gene Clines then doubled and Roberto Clemente hit a sacrifice fly. Willie Stargell followed with a second two bagger, to make it 2-2.
Don Kessinger and Pepitone each doubled off Bruce Kison in the top of the third, putting the Cubs ahead, 3-1. In the bottom of the fifth, Clines drew a base on balls and Clemente hit his 11th triple of the season, tying the game at 3 all. That would be Pizzaro’s last inning, Kison worked through the seventh.
Chicago looked poised for the upset, when Jim Hickman hit a solo homer off Nellie Briles, who had taken over for Kison, in the top of the eighth inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, Bob Robertson led off with a single off of reliever, Ray Newman. Gene Alley and Bill Mazeroski both fanned and the Cubs were one out away from a victory.
Jose Pagan pinch hit for Briles and kept the rally alive with a clutch single. Chicago pulled Newman and called on Bill Bonham. Cash drilled the first pitch into the corner for a game winning, two run triple, as the Buccos snatched victory from defeat.
WP-Nelson Briles(9-5). LP-Bill Bonham. HR-Joe Pepitone; Jim Hickman.
