Dock Ellis had a 2-0 lead, with two outs in the top of the eighth inning, when Joe Pepitone hit a game tying, two run home run. The Pirates called on Dave Giusti, who got the final out in that inning, but in the eighth, allowed three singles and hit a batter, as the Cubs scored two runs in the top of the ninth, to defeat Pittsburgh, 4-3. WP-Phil Regan. LP-Dave Giusti(3-5).
The stage is set for a big four game series against St. Louis in which Luke Walker will have a big task as he takes on the Cardinals crafty left hander, Steve Carlton, in game one.
