GM# 119 AUGUST 13, 1971 VS ST. LOUIS CARDINALS
CARDS WIN SLOPPY DEFENSIVE GAME; NOW HAVE 2-0 SERIES LEAD
The Cardinals committed two errors, the Pirates three, none worse than Gene Alley’s bobble off the bat of Dal Maxvill, which was part of a three-run, top of the ninth for St. Louis. St. Louis would claim a 6-3 victory.
Eventual losing pitcher, Mudcat Grant allowed a single to Ted Kubiak, then Maxvill reached on the error, then Grant hit pinch hitter, Bob Burda, loading the bases in the ninth, with the score tied at three.
Dave Giusti came on and after striking out Matty Alou, he gave up a two run single to Ted Sizemore, then Jose Cruz hit a sacrifice fly. Joe Torre then doubled, his second two bagger of the game, but catcher, Jerry McNerty, grounded out to end the inning.
That gave St. Louis a three run cushion and Pittsburgh was set down in order in the bottom of the ninth.
The Bucs have lost three in a row and are in a power slump, having not hit a home run in four straight games. WP-Don Shaw. LP-Mudcat Grant(2-4). SV-Chuck Taylor.
Things get no easier for the Pirates as Bob Johnson has the tall task of going against Bob Gibson, in game three.
