1971 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

GM#121 AUGUST 15, 1971 VS ST. LOUIS CARDINALS

CARDS WIN, 9-4, TO COMPLETE FOUR GAME SWEEP OF PIRATES

If Pittsburgh ends up losing the N.L. East crown, this series may well be looked back on as the turning point. St. Louis defeated Pittsburgh, 9-4, thereby taking all four games at Three Rivers Stadium. They have shaved an eight deficit down to just four.

Bruce Kison started and went five, but he was not the dominant pitcher he has been, allowing 3 runs on 9 hits. Despite that, he was only down a run when he exited after five innings.

Unfortunately, Nellie Briles gave up four runs in just one third of an inning, to essentially put the game away. Matty Alou doubled and scored in the eighth and Ted Simmons hit a solo shot in the top of the ninth, rudely adding two more runs to the Cardinal’s tally.

Al Oliver hit a two run homerun in the fourth, the first Pirate homer in a very long time. The homestand concludes with a three game series against the Houston Astros. WP-Reggie Cleveland. LP-Nelson Briles(9-6). HR-Ted Simmons; Al Oliver(15).
