1971 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

GM# 123 AUGUST 17, 1971 VS HOUSTON ASTROS

ALLEY HITS GAME WINNING TRIPLE AS BUCS WIN 3-2, IN BOTTOM OF NINTH

Gene Alley was the hero, lacing a triple into the corner, while Manny Sanguillen raced home with the winning run, as Pittsburgh defeated the Houston Astros, 3-2.

Luke Walker started and went six and two thirds. The Pirates got the ball rolling in the bottom of the first. Dave Cash singled off Astros starter, Wade Blasingame, then stole second. He was singled in by Gene Clines, for a 1-0 Pirates lead.

Houston tied it the very next inning, when Jim Wynn doubled and was driven in by Jack Hiatt. Pittsburgh retook the lead in the same fashion, in the bottom of the fourth inning. Willie Stargell doubled, then Bob Robertson singled him in, to make it, 2-1, Pittsburgh.

Walker stumbled in the top of the seventh, allowing back to back walks and an rbi single to Roger Metzger, tying the game at 2 all. Bob Miller finished the seventh with no further damage and pitched a clean eighth. Dave Giusti came in to pitch a clean ninth and set up Alley’s heroics.

Sangy singled off Specio Spinks to begin the Pirates final inning of regulation. Spinks then got Robertson to fly out, but Alley came up and drove a ball deep into the left field corner. The fleet Pirate catcher was able to race around the bases for the winning tally, 3-2. WP-Dave Giusti(4-5). LP-Specio Spinks.

The Pirates got more good news as St. Louis lost once again, to Cincinnati, thereby stretching the Bucs lead in the standings back up to six games. The final game in this series has Steve Blass vs. Don Wilson, on the mound.
