GM# 124 AUGUST 18, 1971 VS HOUSTON ASTROS
GIUSTI BLOWS SAVE; ASTROS SCORE 4 RUNS IN 9TH TO WIN, 7-5
One day after collecting his fourth win, reliever Dave Giusti imploded, blowing a 5-3 lead by Steve Blass and Nellie Briles.
Giusti started the top of the ninth inning by allowing a single to Johnny Edwards. He then threw a wild pitch, allowing Edwards to advance. Giusti appeared to have settled down, fanning both Roger Metzger and pinch hitter, Norm Miller, however, he then gave up an rbi single to Jesus Alou. Joe Morgan then doubled and Cesar Cedeno drilled a two run single, sending Giusti to the showers.
Bob Watson singled to center and Al Oliver morphed that into a two base error, letting yet another run cross the dish. The Pirates briefly rallied in the last of the ninth. when Dave Cash and Vic Davalillo each singled with two outs, but Al Oliver grounded out to end the game.
Davalillo had three hits and Willie Stargell homered in defeat. WP-Denny LeMaster. LP-Dave Giusti(4-6). HR-Stargell(36).
Pittsburgh now heads back out on the road, starting with a four game series at Cincinnati against the Reds.
