GM# 127 AUGUST 21, 1971 AT CINCINNATI REDS
ELLIS ROUGHED UP AS REDS ROUT BUCS, 9-3
Dock Ellis was pounded by Cincinnati hitters, to the tune of six runs allowed in just an inning and two thirds. Pete Rose hit the very first pitch of the game out of Riverfront Stadium and it just got worse from there. In the bottom of the second inning, George Foster doubled and was singled in by Tommy Helms. Ellis fanned the next two batters, but walked Rose, gave up a single to Hal McRae, then surrendered a three run blast to Lee May. Nelson Briles would cough up three more runs, before Jim Nelson and Bob Veale took over. Despite allowing six more hits, those two relievers prevented any further Cincinnati scoring. WP-Wayne Simpson. LP-Dock Ellis(12-5). HR-Pete Rose, Lee May.
The series finale pits Luke Walker against Gary Nolan.
