1971 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

GM# 128 AUGUST 22, 1971 AT CINCINNATI REDS

ROBERTSON HR GIVES BUCS 1-0 WIN IN 11 INNING, PITCHER’S DUEL

Luke Walker and Gary Nolan hooked up in one of the best pitcher’s duels of the year. In the end, the Pirates claimed a 1-0 victory on a top of the eleventh inning home run by Bob Robertson, off reliever, Wayne Granger.

It really was a shame anyone had to lose this game. Nolan went 10 full innings, allowing no runs on just one hit. He struck out ten and did not walk a single batter. Walker pitched eight innings, allowing no runs on just two hits. He struck out three and walked two.

The Reds decided Nolan had gone long enough after ten innings and decided to bring in Granger. It would cost them the ballgame, as Robertson, who had struck out in his three previous trips to the plate, slammed a Granger offering over the left field wall, for the game’s first and subsequently, only run.

Pittsburgh’s Bob Miller, who relieved Walker and worked the eighth and ninth innings, kept his record perfect at 9 wins and 0 losses, all in relief. Dave Giusti pitched the bottom of the eleventh to earn his 15th save. WP-Miller(9-0). LP-Granger. SV-Giusti(15).

After splitting a four game series with the Reds, the Pirates head to Atlanta for another four game set, starting with a doubleheader tomorrow. Steve Blass squares off against Phil Niekro in the opening game.
