1971 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

GM# 132 AUGUST 25, 1971 AT ATLANTA BRAVES

PIRATES PUT UP SEASON HIGH 14 RUNS, AS THEY WIN SERIES WITH BRAVES

At first it seemed as if Pittsburgh was headed for a loss in the final game of their four game series with Atlanta. Bruce Kison trailed 4-1 and left after just four innings. However the Bucs scored eight runs in the top of the fifth inning, sending thirteen men to the plate. The final score was 14-6 in favor of Pittsburgh.

Willie Stargell hit #39 and has now homered in three consecutive games. He scored three runs and drove in three. Roberto Clemente had three doubles. Rennie Stennett had a three hit day at the top of the order and also had three runs batted in. Dave Cash had a double and two singles.

Luke Walker took over for Kison and because Bruce didn’t go five innings, Walker was named winning pitcher. Jim Nelson finished up in fine fashion, pitching no run, no hit ball over the final three innings. WP-Luke Walker(10-3). LP-George Stone. HR-Willie Stargell(39), Earl Williams.

There are no games scheduled on August 26. Standings will be posted after that date.

The Pirates next head to Houston to face the Astros.
