Cesar Cedeno hit a two out triple in the bottom of the ninth off Mudcat Grant but was stranded. Grant’s luck would run out in the tenth, as Marty Martinez doubled in Rich Chiles with the winning run, giving Houston a 4-3 victory over Pittsburgh. The Astros take the series, two games to one. All the games were won by one run.
The Pirates wasted four hit days by both Roberto Clemente and Al Oliver in the loss. WP-Tom Griffen. LP-Mudcat Grant(2-5).
The Cardinals beat the Reds, cutting Pittsburgh’s lead in the N.L. East to five games. Pittsburgh now heads back home and will play Philadelphia. Chris Short battles Nellie Briles in the opener.
