GM# 136 AUGUST 30, 1971 VS PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES
PIRATE PITCHERS ALLOW THREE, 3 RUN HOMERS, IN 9-5 LOSS TO PHILLIES
Dave Cash hit a two run single off Chris Short in the bottom of the first, then in the third, Roberto Clemente’s sacrifice fly added run #3. Things looked bright, but went south in a hurry, as Nelson Briles surrendered a three run homerun to Willie Montanez, in the top of the fourth, tying the game.
Briles got through the fifth, but in the top of the sixth, it was deja vu, as Tim McCarver and Deron Johnson both singled. After getting Montanez to pop out, Don Money clubbed a second, three run blast, putting Philadelphia up, 6-3. Bob Veale came in and got the final two outs of that inning.
Jim Nelson took over and was no breath of fresh air. He issued back to back walks to Short and Roger Stone. Larry Bowa reached on a fielder’s choice, with Short advancing to third and Stone forced at second base. Tim McCarver stepped in and clubbed Philadelphia’s third, three run home run of the day. That made it 9-3. The Bucs scraped out a couple of runs in garbage time, but the damage had been done.
To make matters worse, St. Louis defeated the Mets, for their third straight win, cutting the Pirates lead in the East to just four games.
Barry Lersch takes on Bob Moose in the next game of the Phila-Pitt series.
