1971 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

AUGUST REVIEW

August was the worst month of the season for the Pittsburgh Pirates, thus far. They finished the month with a winning record, but just barely, winning 16 out of 31 games. The red hot St. Louis Cardinals are hot on their trail and have shaved the Bucs lead to just four games. At one point, the Pirates had a five game losing streak.

Richie Hebner has missed a great deal of action with military reserve duty. Dave Cash has filled in at third and it is obviously not his natural position. Willie Stargell and Bob Robertson had a good month, power wise, with Stargell clubbing eight homers and Robertson, five.

Nelson Briles had three losses in August. Jim Miller saw his unbeaten pitching streak end. The September stretch should be a dogfight.
