GM# 138 SEPTEMBER 1, 1971 VS PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES
ELLIS HOLDS ON FOR WIN DESPITE POOR COMMAND
Pittsburgh defeated Philadelphia, 3-1 and Dock Ellis was the winning pitcher, but even Dock himself would say he was very fortunate to come away with the “W”.
Ellis issued two walks and hit three batters, but was able to get out of jam after jam and nab his thirteenth win of the season.
The Bucs got a run in the first, then Gene Clines hit a two run single in the fifth, to account for the Pirates’ scoring. Despite Ellis’ control issues, the Phillies were held scoreless until Willie Montenez tripled off reliever, Luke Walker, in the eighth. Oscar Gamble then singled him in, for Philadelphia’s lone run.
Thus the Pirates take the series, two games to one. Pittsburgh is off tomorrow, as are the Cardinals. Standings will be posted for August 2.
