GM# 139 SEPTEMBER 3, 1971 VS MONTREAL EXPOS
EXPOS EDGE BUCS, 3-2, IN TEN INNINGS
Montreal scored two quick runs in the top of the first, behind Steve Renko, who shut Pittsburgh down over the next seven innings. However, the Pirates would rally in the eighth, when Rennie Stennett, Roberto Clemente and Vic Davallilo all singled, ending Renko’s outing. Lefty, Dan McGinn was called on to face Willie Stargell and Al Oliver. He fanned Stargell, but Oliver doubled, scoring the second run of the inning to tie the game. Mike Marshall came in and got the last two outs in the eighth.
Dave Giusti held the Expos scoreless in the top of the ninth, but was lifted for pinch hitter, Bob Robertson, in the bottom of the ninth. Robbie came through with a clutch, one out double, but was stranded.
Nelson Briles took over in the top of the tenth and Boots Day greeted him with a leadoff triple. Rusty Staub grounded out with the infield in, but Ron Fairley lifted a ball to left field, for a sacrifice fly, which gave Montreal the 3-2 lead. Howie Reed faced four batters in the bottom of the tenth but was able to shut the door on any further scoring. WP-Mike Marshall. LP-Nelson Briles(9-9). SV-Howie Reed.
