1971 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

GM# 141 SEPTEMBER 5, 1971 VS MONTREAL EXPOS

EXPOS WIN SERIES BY THROTTLING PIRATES, 15-7

For the second time this season, the Montreal Expos have hung 15 runs, the most of any opponent, on the Pittsburgh Pirates, winning the last of a three-game series, by a score of 15-7.

Bruce Kison started and though he gave up seven runs in just four and a third innings, he came away with a no decision. That’s because the Bucs, trailing 11-2 after six innings, scored five runs over the final three innings.

Luke Walker was tagged with the loss, as he lasted just two thirds of an inning and surrendered four runs. Jim Nelson and Mudcat Grant then stepped in to pitch the sixth, seventh and eighth. They held Montreal scoreless over that span, then Bob Miller pitched the ninth. It was his worst outing by far, as he allowed four more runs in the massacre.

In all, Pirate pitchers allowed two home runs, walked six and hit three batters. Pittsburgh did get homers from Willie Stargell and Jackie Hernandez, who hit a pinch-hit blast in the seventh, but all and all, it was a game they have to put in the rear view mirror, quickly. WP-Bill Stoneman. LP-Luke Walker(10-4). HR-John Bocabella, Bob Bailey; Willie Stargell(41), Jackie Hernandez(3).

The Pirates will next face the Chicago Cubs. They have a double header with them on September 6.
