CLINES IS HERO AS BUCS BEAT CUBS, 5-3, IN TWELVE INNINGS
After each team missed golden opportunities to score in the later innings; Gene Clines, who had replaced Al Oliver in center field; after the latter left the game in the ninth; stroked a two run home run in the top of the 12th inning, to send Pittsburgh past Chicago, 5-3.
Milt May hit a one out triple in the top of the ninth, but was stranded and Clines doubled in the top of the tenth, but again, failed to score.
Richie Hebner remains red hot. He homered yet again, his third in as many games. MVP candidate, Willie Stargell drilled his league leading, 44th home run, in the sixth inning.
Steve Blass started and went six, but it was Bruce Kison, who pitched the 11th and 12th, after Dave Giusti worked the tenth, who got the win.
Philadelphia dispatched St. Louis, allowing the Pirates to go 4.5 games up in the standings. WP-Bruce Kison(5-1). LP-Bill Bonham. HR-Gene Clines(5), Richie Hebner(10), Willie Stargell(44).
