GM# 149 SEPTEMBER 14, 1971 AT CHICAGO CUBS
CUBS TOO MUCH FOR BUCS IN 8-3 LOSS
The Pirates were held to just five hits by Ferguson Jenkins and two relievers, as the Chicago Cubs won, 8-3.
Pittsburgh got solo homers from Al Oliver and Rennie Stennett, but it wasn’t nearly enough. Chicago’s, Billy Williams was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle and Cleo James had a pair of doubles. Brock Davis had three hits and scored three times.
Errors by Oliver and Rich Hebner figured in the scoring as four of the six runs allowed by Bucs starter, Bob Johnson, were unearned. WP-Jenkins. LP-Johnson(5-7). HR-Al Oliver(17), Rennie Stennett(2); Billy Williams.
Fortunately for Pittsburgh, the Philadelphia Phillies took care of business against the Cardinals again, so the lead stays at 4.5 games. The Pirates now head home to battle their rivals in two big games at Three Rivers Stadium.
