GM#151 SEPTEMBER 16, 1971 VS ST. LOUIS CARDINALS
CARDS GET REVENGE. RALLY LATE TO BEAT BUCS, 6-5
Luke Walker left after pitching the Pirates to a 5-2 lead after six innings. That lead would go up like a puff of smoke as the Cardinals got a run each off Bruce Kison and Mudcat Grant; then two runs off losing pitcher, Bob Miller, when Ted Simmons stroked a two run double in the top of the ninth. The Cardinals won the game, 6-5.
Lou Brock had three hits, Simmons had two doubles and Joe Torre also had a two bagger. Roberto Clemente hit a two run blast in the bottom of the sixth, after Vic Davilillo hit a pinch-hit triple and was driven in by a Rennie Stennett single. WP-Al Santorini. LP-Bob Miller. SV-Moe Drabowsky. HR-Roberto Clemente(11).
Next, the New York Mets come into Pittsburgh for a three-game series; while St. Louis heads to Montreal to play the Expos. The Pirates cling to a 4.5 game lead, with eleven games left to play.
