1971 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

GM# 152 SEPTEMBER 17, 1971 VS NEW YORK METS

PIRATES LOSE TO METS, 9-5; CARDS WIN, LEAD SHAVED TO 3.5 GAMES

Pittsburgh dropped a 9-5 decision to the New York Mets, while St. Louis was beating the Expos, thus cutting the Pirates lead in the East to just three and a half games. The team’s best player, Willie Stargell, is currently sidelined with a sore knee. No word on his return.

Ed Kranepool got the Mets out to an early lead by stroking a three run blast off starter, Nellie Briles, in the first inning. The Pirates answered quickly, when Rennie Stennett singled in the bottom of the first. Vic Davalillo flew out, but Al Oliver tripled, then scored himself on a Bud Harrelson error.

Briles exited after five innings, with the score tied at three all. His replacement, Bob Moose, was completely ineffective, allowing three singles, a walk and a wild pitch. Bob Veale took over, but three more runs had crossed the dish for the Mets.

Trailing 6 to 3, Pittsburgh again answered the bell. Al Oliver hit his eighteenth home run of the season and after two quick outs, Bob Robertson doubled. He scored the Bucs fifth run of the day on a Gene Clines single.

The Mets put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh. With Kranepool and Mike Jorgenson aboard, Duffy Dyer belted a three run homer, to put New York ahead to stay, 9-5. WP-Gary Gentry. LP-Bob Moose(10-11). HR-Ed Kranepool, Duffy Dyer; Al Oliver(18).

In game two of the series, Steve Blass will try to get the Bucs back on the winning side, as he battles Ray Sadecki.
