CLINES ENDS 16 INNING MARATHON WITH GAME WINNING TRIPLE
The Pittsburgh Pirates pulled out a 3-2 victory over the New York Mets, when Gene Clines tripled in pitcher, Jim Nelson, in the bottom of the sixteenth inning. It was the longest game of the season, thus far.
The Mets led, 2-1, when Bob Robertson hit a pinch hit, game tying home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Neither club could score until Clines’ heroics in the 16th inning.
In addition, Montreal defeated St. Louis, allowing Pittsburgh to increase their lead back to 4.5 games. WP-Jim Nelson(2-3). LP-Jim McAndrew. HR-Bob Robertson(32).
The final game of the series has Bob Johnson going up against Jerry Koosman.
