1971 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

GM# 154 SEPTEMBER 19, 1971 VS NEW YORK METS

PIRATES PULL OUT ANOTHER EXTRA INNING THRILLER WITH 2 RUNS IN 10TH

Pittsburgh trailed the New York Mets, 1-0, heading into the bottom of the tenth inning. Rennie Stennett led off with a triple against Ron Taylor, then Gene Clines singled, tying the game. Roberto Clemente then laced a ball into the right-field corner and the fleet Clines scored the winning run, all the way from first base.

In the meantime, the St. Louis Cardinals were mauling the Montreal Expos, 11-0, thereby holding their position at 4.5 games behind first place Pittsburgh. This sets up, probably, the series of the year. Three games between the two clubs at St. Louis, beginning on September 21.

Each team has eight games to go in the schedule. Pittsburgh’s magic number is currently five, meaning any combination of Pirate wins or Cardinal losses, which total five, will ensure Pittsburgh the division title.
