CARDINALS THROTTLE PIRATES, 8-3, IN SERIES OPENER

St. Louis defeated Pittsburgh, 8-3, in the first of three games at Busch Stadium.

Dock Ellis lasted just four innings, in all, five Pirate pitchers were used. Two of those, Mudcat Grant and Bob Veale, failed to record a single out.

Pittsburgh got solo homeruns from Roberto Clemente and Manny Sanguillen, but it was not nearly enough, as Matty Alou went 4-4 for the Cards, while Lou Brock and Ted Sizemore each stroked triples. WP-Jerry Reuss. LP-Bob Moose(10-12). HR-Roberto Clemente(12), Manny Sanguillen(5).

The Bucs lead shrinks to 3.5 games. Luke Walker will try to right the ship against Bob Gibson, in game two.
