GM# 157 SEPTEMBER 23, 1971 AT ST. LOUIS CARDINALS
CARDINALS COMPLETE SWEEP OF PIRATES WITH 4-1 WIN
The St. Louis Cardinals handed Pittsburgh a third straight loss, defeating them, 4-1, behind Reggie Cleveland.
It truly was the St. Louis blues for the Pirates, whose hopes for the division title are fading fast. The hard charging Cards are now just a game and a half back and showing no signs of slowing down.
The Pirates struck first in this one, with Dave Cash doubling and scoring on Willie Stargell’s single, in the first inning. St. Louis tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, when Ted Simmons plated Ted Sizemore, with a single.
St. Louis took the lead for good in the home seventh. Bob Miller was in to relieve. He surrendered doubles to both Dal Maxvill and Lou Brock, putting the Cardinals ahead, 2-1. They tacked on two more in the eighth, when Dave Giusti also allowed a pair of two baggers, this time to Simmons and Joe Hague.
Though Pittsburgh tied St. Louis with ten total hits, they were only able to push one run across. Four runners in scoring position were stranded. WP-Reggie Cleveland. LP-Bob Miller(10-3).
The Bucs now head to New York, for a three game series against the Mets, while St. Louis battles Montreal. As things stand now, Pittsburgh’s magic number remains at five.
