FADING PIRATES DROP FOURTH STRAIGHT; LOSE 5-4 TO METS
After being swept by the Cardinals, things got no better for the Pirates, as they dropped the opening game against the Mets, 5-4.
The Cards pulverized the Expos, 10-6 and are now just a half game behind Pittsburgh for first place in the National League East.
Most of the scoring came early in the game, with Willie Stargell clubbing his 45th home run of the season, a two-run shot, in the top of the first. New York answered with a run in their half of the opening stanza, against Bruce Kison, who lasted just three innings.
A Bud Harrelson error led to two more Pirate runs in the top of the fourth, but the Mets responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, as Kison walked two, gave up a single threw a wild pitch.
New York took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth. Jerry Grote doubled off Luke Walker, then Tim Foli singled him in, to take a 5-4 lead. Jim McAndrew and Danny Frisella pitched shutout ball over the final five innings. WP-Jim McAndrew. LP-Luke Walker(10-6). HR-Willie Stargell(45).
