PIRATES IN FREE FALL AFTER METS WIN, 7-3. CARDS NOW IN 1ST PLACE
St. Louis roared into first place after Pittsburgh had been there most of the year. They now lead the Bucs by a half game. Pittsburgh has three games left, while the Cardinals have four remaining, due to a make up game. The Pirates have dropped five straight, while the Cards have won six in a row.
Errors by Gene Clines and Gene Alley led to five unearned runs, as the New York Mets defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates for the second straight day, by a score of 7-3.
New York scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Tommie Agee lofted a ball to Clines in center field, which was promptly misplayed into a two base error.
Art Shamsky homered for the Mets. WP-Danny Frisella. LP-Jim Nelson(2-4). HR-Art Shamsky.
The Mets will try to sweep the Pirates in game three, with aces, Tom Seaver facing Steve Blass.
