BUCS ON LIFE SUPPORT AFTER SEAVER TOSSES FIVE HIT SHUTOUT
Pittsburgh’s chances of catching the Cardinals are all but over, after the Pirates have been swept for the second straight series. St. Louis was busy sweeping the Expos, winning, 7-1.
The Mets won the third and final game of the series, 4-0, in style, with a five hit shutout by Tom Seaver. The franchise pitcher fanned eight and walked only one. The Bucs managed two doubles against Seaver but couldn’t get a runner past second base.
Meanwhile, Steve Blass took the loss, going five innings, but allowing three runs in that span. WP-Tom Seaver. LP-Steve Blass(14-5).
Pittsburgh does not play on the 27th, in fact, the only two teams playing are St. Louis at New York. St. Louis’ magic number to clinch is two, which means, for all intents and purposes, Pittsburgh would have to beat Philadelphia twice, on the 29th and 30th and St. Louis would have to lose out, to the Mets, for the Pirates to have any chance.
