1941 Philadelphia Athletics Remix
It’s 1941. Tired of last place finishes and longing for the championship teams of ten years ago, Philadelphia Athletics owner and manager, Connie Mack, has shocked the baseball world.
Mack has pushed the envelope and signed 9 Negro League stars to big league contracts. He has inked pitchers: Satchel Paige, Bill Foster, Bullet Joe Rogan and Smokey Joe Williams; as well as catchers, Josh Gibson and Biz Mackey. Also signed were infielders, Ray Dandridge and Buck Leonard. Finally, speedy outfielder, James Cool Papa Bell, will play for the Athletics in 1941.
Manager Mack has gutted his entire current starting rotation. Two of his pitchers were holdouts, the other two refused to play with the newly signed men. Five other Athletics were also issued unconditional releases. The following will not play for Philadelphia this year: Phil Marchildon, Bill Beckman, Les McCrabb, Jack Knott, Johnny Babich, Fred Chapman, Don Richmond, Dee Myles and Frankie Hayes.
The season officially gets under way on April 14th, with the traditional opener in Washington D.C.; where the Senators will host the New York Yankees. The Athletics will open their season on the road. They will play the Yankees on April 15th.
